Nature of Business: I write and produce TV shows and films.  In order to help others to meet the people they need to know for their TV shows and films to move forward I also started an event called the Great American PitchFest - which is similiar to speed dating, where people can meet with executives and agents from the film and television industry and pitch them their projects.
To me, entrepreneurship means you identify a 'need' or 'want', and provide a service or product that fullfills that need.  I was just starting my career as a writer/producer, which meant I needed to meet as many people as possible to pitch my ideas, scripts, and concepts to.  But getting access to these people by going to conferences and festivals meant expensive travel and registration fees, and it also took years to establish relationships with them.  It was a very slow, draining process.  At these events, I would constantly talk to other writers and producers who faced the same dilemma. 'Access' was what was needed to jumpstart their careers.  So I started an event to help other writers and producers to meet the people they needed to know for their careers to move forward.  Today, the Great American PitchFest and the Great Canadian PitchFest have helped thousands of people to meet with agents, production companies, and other industry executives to pitch their projects.  We have had more than 50 success stories (that we know of) where participants have signed with an agent or manager, been hired for writing assignments, or had their scripts optioned.

The most important lesson I've learned is....I've learned so many.  1) Surround yourself with great people who support your vision, and who you enjoy being with. 2) Surround yourself with at least one person who supports your vision but also thinks very differently than you.  Your differing thoughts on things will make your business stronger. 3) Ignore naysayers.  As you become successful, you will make enemies.  Expect that, but give it as little of your attention as possible. 4) If you build it and it's great, they will come - eventually.  Making it great depends on you and how you respond to the circumstances around you.  5) Always tuck your loved ones in - even if you have to work late.  Success is not just about building a solid business.  It's about building a happy life.

I want to encourage you to think about a 'unique need or want' that people or certain businesses might have.  What problems do they face on a daily basis?  Now if you were to invent a solution to their problem, need, or want - what would it be?  Do this for at least ten different needs, wants, and problems - what was your best idea?  Make a list of the steps you would need to take to achieve it.  If you follow it, you are an entrepreneur.
