Nature of Business: Publishing I became an entrepreneur because I love working with words. While I was in college, my father ran a newsletter devoted to screenwriters. I was an English major and I wanted to run a business while still using creativity every day. Turning the newsletter into a magazine seemed like the solution. Over the years, the magazine grew into a thriving business, offering writers events, services and contests to help with their screenwriting careers. After 13 years, I sold the company to another company but maintained my position as manager of the events and the publication. What I learned from running my own business has served me well in the corporate world, and as hard as some of the times were, I would not give them up. To me, entrepreneurship means being able to survive in the face of adversity and being able to creatively solve problems with few resources. Entrepreurship also means ownership - what you create is yours and it is your mark on the world. |
